Outfit of the Day: Baking (Not so)Betty

Ignore the headless doggie

Hahaha I am not looking my most stylish today... my hair isn't even (gasp) done! Do I loose my vintage cred? I decided I wanted to make bread today. I don't know why, I have never made bread in my life... it just sounded like a good idea. So my outfit today is a ratty vintage sun dress I thrifted for 4$ and a vintage apron that was gifted. My hair is straight in a ponytail... not even pomped. So while I am not the Baking Betty I should be, I just thought it would be funny to share my "awesomeness".

For those curious, I am baking cocoa bread from a 1929 cook book. I don't know how it will taste... or if it will even be edible as kitchen skills I do lack, but it is fun to try. If it does turn out, I will be delivering it to a friend of mine. She is the sweetest person in the world and will genuinely love the gift of homemade bread! If it doesn't turn out and is hard as a rock, I will be throwing it through the window of my arch nemesis. Just teasing.

So are any of you out there a bit like me? Unable to successfully cook/bake, but enjoy doing it anyway? Share your stories with me. Your best effort or your funniest fail!

  1. How on earth could you loose your vintage cred! You still look like you stepped out of 1940 AND you are baking out of a 1929 cook book so that even gets you more! I love the thought of baking but most of my attempts have been bland and hopeless so I just dream about it instead of doing it. However I have been having this real desire to try it out again, who knows I may get it right since it has been about 20 years since I have baked anything!!!

  2. Brooksie... You are just too sweet!! Turns out, my bread didn't turn out so well. Mostly because I got impatient and didn't let it rise enough before baking it. I am going to try again tomorrow. I can say, it tasted good though! I say try baking again! I am finding it therapeutic. My one big piece of advice... make sure you aren't relying on what you are cooking up as your meal! Just in case it doesn't turn out! Hah!

  3. I am not good at baking at all, but I still think it's a ton of fun. And you look really cute here! I love your pink dress with the apron!

  4. bah you can't lose your vintage cred, I think people have more vintage cred when they don't feel the need to photo themselves perfectly coiffed but still look the part!! I didn't say that well but I'm sure you know what I mean he he!

I don't bake often, mostly cos I'm big enough without eating stuff that I bake! I do enjoy making dough for pizza occasionally though, and if I say so myself, it's pretty good. The thing with dough as you point out is patience and hard work!

  5. I've found that the key thing with baking is to follow the recipe exactly - deviation equals disaster - in my experience.

You look very cute there honeypie. xxx

  6. I love to bake and I'm good at it but I can't make bread, I can bake bread rolls and hot cross buns though and yes, you must let it rise. Looking cute in your apron.

  7. You always look adorable! and i love to cook but am the WORST!! I make a great fettucini alfredo (sauce from scratch) and can stir fry tofu and veggies like no one else but that is it. I constantly burn toast, oversteam broccoli and can't get frozen pizza to cook evenly!
