Merry Christmas!!

Ahhhh... 3 months since my last shoot and my last post -- not too bad.

Merry Christmas everyone!

A couple of weeks ago I met up with local photographer, Darrell Craig Harris and did a very short, not sure what we would, do shoot. I knew I wanted to do something simple and for Christmas, so we snapped a few pics and here is the outcome.

Nelson's Landing with Miranda Photography

Not too long ago I got to spend the morning out at Nelson's Landing with Miranda Photography shooting some pictures. It was my first shoot with John and my first outing to the "ghost town".

John was a great pleasure to work with and was quite wonderful in making sure I was safe and ok at all times. Walking around in dirt and rocks in vintage heels was probably not the best idea. We even talked about making sure I bring a change of shoes next time so that I could walk with ease from shot to shot.

Nelson's Landing is a great place for sets and textures to shoot at. If you are looking for rustic aged backgrounds for your photos this place is a must! There is a photography fee to shoot at this place, but that goes to the up keep of this quaint little oasis in the desert. There are buildings and cars and other great props that you can pose with and enjoy.

For this shoot I had made a 2 piece outfit from the vintage 1940's McCall 5650 pattern. While the pattern originally features a play suit with button up over skirt, I decided to keep the top and shorts of the play suit separate as I thought all that tiny blue gingham would have been just too much. I ran out of time to make the shorts out of a matching solid, but I will eventually get to doing that. I had forgotten to lengthen the bodice for my preying mantas body, so with a deadline fast approaching, I had to alter that bodice a bit to make it work in time. Speaking of the deadline... I thought I could knock this outfit out in about 5 hours. I started at 11am on Friday, didn't finish until 5am Saturday!! Did I mention I had to get up at 7:30a, to be picked up by 8:00am for the shoot? Oy!!  I also ran out of time to add the pocket and ruffled edge.

When it comes to the pocket, I am undecided if I want to add it now that the skirt is complete. I wanted to do a little something different instead of just the matching gingham and was thinking about adding a matching solid with some sort of western motif. However, I could not decide on a simple motif that would work well. Should I do a wagon wheel? A sombrero? A coyote? Ooh... a coyote with cactus. I think you just helped me figure it out!

Since I was so backed up with prepping because sewing took a lot longer than I had anticipated, I was unable to set my hair properly and had to work with what I had. Not sure if it was the wind or the humidity from the nearby river, but something made my hair constantly blow up and because of that I have huge hair in these pictures. Hahahaha I suppose that is alright.

Over all the experience was a delight and I can't wait to both work with Miranda Photography and go back to Nelson's Landing!!

Please enjoy the photos and if you are a model in Las Vegas, please give John a ring to shoot!

Tooled Talent

I am so very fortunate to have such sweet, amazing, and talented friends! Two of which are a husband and wife team I met online and then in person when I moved to back to Wisconsin way back when... I am always astonished by the creations these two create individually! Many followers know the sewing talents of BoPeep of The Willow Homestead, but did you know her husband Hank is just as talented?

I (not so) recently discovered that Hank took up leather tooling... as a hobby... and has created some gorgeous leather creations, mostly for his wife. Lucky lady!! His talent with belt making caught my eye and being that I have wanted a tooled belt for myself, I asked if he would make for me with my name across the back. He graciously said yes!

He asked me what kind of design I wanted on the belt. I left it up to his creative talents for the design. Imagine my surprise when he went a step further and created a very special belt buckle that was so amazing I squealed a bit when I saw it!!

Today I finally received my belt (my fault for the delay -- I'm a forgetful doo doo head) in the mail and I couldn't be happier! The belt fits like a dream and the rhinestones were a great surprise! I cannot thank Hank enough for his talents and care with this belt!! Which I need to do! I am off to thank Hank so you take a look at the belt! Tell me that buckle isn't perfect for my fanny!

Sunday is Laundry Day!

I enjoy doing my household chores on Sunday. I know for many it is a day of rest, but for me, it's when I get started! I am not sure why I have chosen Sunday to be my household day. Perhaps it is because there is NOTHING on tv to distract me. So I usually just pop in an old movie and let it play in the background. A lot of the time it's a movie that I love and seen a million times like, Stagedoor Canteen, Stage Door, or the Women. However, today, it's a day of one of my two favourite comedians... Red Skelton!! Jack Benny is my other favourite in case you were wondering.

Today I decided to focus my household chores on the pile of hand wash that has been building up and up and up and up. Some of it is vintage I want to sell off and get rid of, some of it is my vintage that I haven't worn in ages because it needs to be washed. Now I am not an expert of household duties -- including laundry. Honestly, as much as I love "wifely duties" I don't know the proper way to do such tasks. So I just try to figure it out and hope for the best.

When it comes to hand washing, so long it isn't lingerie delicates, I usually just fill the tub to just over the garments I have tossed in and let them soak in the soapy water for about 10-15 mins. (Oops! has it been an hour already?) I tend to throw in about 2-3 like colored garments and then once they've soaked for a few I rinse them out and hang them outside on my wooden rack to dry. The Las Vegas sun and heat make a great quick drying combo for laundry day!

I love this silly rack. It has warped and splintered and it is beat, but dang it I love it! It folds right up and I just keep it in the kitchen when it is not in use. I wish I had an extra space to actually store it in, out of the way, but my place is tiny and I got to make do.

Speaking of making -- I am wearing my favourite summer house dress. You will see a lot of this dress as I tend to wear it every day lounging around the house. I made this dress from a 1930's pattern. With it's loose fitting wrapped waist with low backline, it is perfect for these hot days in Las Vegas when I am just hanging around the house, cleaning or vegging. My favourite part about this dress... no bra required! Thank you 1930s fashions!!

I made the dress from some cheap black, red, and white stretchy piqued material. I never properly finished adding the snaps to the back to keep the back from exposing my behind, so I have just opted for some safety pins. This has caused me to tear the back up from sitting and tugging and it is now my rag dress. Not going to be wearing this dress out on the town anytime soon!! The buttoned straps are just for decoration. The straps are a tad long and tend to fall down on me, but I am ok with that. My dog is the only one who will catch a glimpse of something only everyone else in the world has caught a glimpse of.

Laundry thrills me -- and so does my nose shadow that gives me a Hitler 'stache!
I also like to take advantage of this day at home and go bare face allowing my skin to be makeup free and breathe. Sometimes I will even wear a facemask -- yes, even when I step outside to hang my clothes. Now, I don't wear much makeup normally. On a daily basis, I just wear a little bit of cover up to conceal the bags under my eyes, powder, mascara, and lipstick. Show days are a whole other story. So Sunday is a treat for me even though I tend to get all sweaty and gross. I really should make more of a ritual of beauty out of my Sundays, but like most everything else I do -- I make it up as I go with a basic outline. In the end, just being makeup free is nice.

Well, time to go check my laundry... Once the pieces are dry, I bring them in to steam or iron the wrinkles out. Needless to say, my work is not done for the day! Enjoy your Sunday everyone!!!

Lemon Zest

Yesterday I had some errands to run. After wearing perm rods in my hair all day the day before and sleeping with them in overnight, I was quite happy to take them out! After brushing out my hair and realizing my hair did not set in the way I wanted, I brushed it through as much as I could and made it somewhat presentable. I highly doubted that the people taking my money for my bills really cared how my hair looked. I was wrong! More on that in a minute.

Before the rain and humidity blew my hair up.

I wore one of my favourite summer playsuits! Perfect for riding my bike around town giving away all my money doing my errands. I made the playsuit from a vintage 1940s pattern. The polka dot sun top underneath is homemade from the 1970s. It doesn't fit me properly alone, but provides the coverage I need under this playsuit!

The day started out hot and sunny. So by time I biked to my first stop, I was dripping sweat. I was happy for my sunscreen, but afraid it wasn't go to do much good for very much longer. By time I reached my 3rd destination on bike, the dark clouds started to roll in and the wind was picking up. With the impending rain looming overhead, both the counter gals at destinations 3 and 4 were actually concerned about the rain coming down and ruining my hair. I was both surprised and flattered.

While I didn't get caught in a downpour... I did get hit with a few sprinkles of rain and an up kick of wind. By time I got home after destination 6, my hair had dropped and fluffed out. Thank you humidity.

I thought I would put some comparative side by side photos of how my hair started out today and how it ended up yesterday. Thanks to my hair becoming HP Fluff and Puff, I added a hair flower to disguise the kinked ridge in my hair from the set last night. It was fine earlier when brushed back, but now... there is no fighting it. Obviously I had some time on my hands so I decided to make this second shoot a little bit more professional versus just using my camera phone for the earlier shots.

Summer Delights

Yesterday, I took advantage of a day off and some Hedy Lamarr inspired waves with center part, and set up my camera in a cozy little corner of the backyard of the complex I live in. This is the only area of the back that has the necessary even shade to prevent both shadows and blowout when taking pictures.

I set up my camera and played with the settings a bit and set the timer multiple times hoping to capture some images to post. Let me tell you, self portraits are not that easy!! I do not know how these fantastic bloggers do it on a daily basis!

However, due to a schedule change, I may have a little more free time to find out just how you bloggers do this on a daily basis!

I do miss the creative process involved with photos and blog postings. I shall try to make a better effort at sharing with you the city of Las Vegas and vintage fashion.

In the meantime... here are a couple of shots I was able to get.

Outfit Details:
Blouse - Vintage 70s/80s I *think* I got it at an estate sale or my best friend gave it to me.
Skirt - Me Made from a vintage 1940s pattern with modified waistband.
Flower - Swag Bag goodie from the Miss Symco Pageant that I hosted in 2012. I wish I knew who the maker was.

Lolita Haze with Ricardo Montalbum at the Las Vegas Burlesque Festival!

Late last year I was able to take part in the Las Vegas Burlesque Festival! From Thursday night to Saturday morning the audience gets to see not only the best in the Southwest, but the very best in the world!

The whole weekend was held inside the gorgeous showroom at The Gold Coast. I was quite delighted to be able to close the festivities Sunday afternoon when Brunchlesque sponsored the closing Brunch! However, I wanted to do a little something different... tired of the striptease, I wanted to remind the audience that the biggest part of Burlesque was NOT the striptease, but rather the COMEDY!!

That's right! I took my moment in the spotlight to entertain with my witty brain! After a moment of naughty poetry by Ricardo Montalbum, Ricardo introduced me to the stage for the final performance...

So am I as funny as I think I am???? Watch the video of Ricardo Montalbum and me and let me know what you think!!
